Renewable energy is seen by some as the only hope for the survival of the planet, yet by others it is viewed as a marginal resource with limited potential. All too often, however, the facts behind the role that renewable energy can and will play in the future global energy scene are disguised or ignored as rival camps distort the evidence to suit their own objectives. It was in the light of this that the World Energy Council undertook a three-year investigation into the possible future contribution of several types of new and renewable energy sources: solar energy; wind energy; geothermal energy; biomass energy; ocean tidal energy; and small hydropower. This text details the results of the detailed research undertaken by the WEC into the possible future role of renewable energy in the years to 2020. The conclusions and recommendations of the study include: the decline of the economic advantages of fossil fuel use; the imbalance between renewable energy and environmental acceptability; and the possibility of reduction in carbon dioxide emission by 25% by the year 2020.
