Descrizione libro Sutton, Great Britain, 2000. Soft Cover. Condizione libro: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. Romney Marsh at War. In this fasvcinating and evocative book, the author recalls the extraordinary effect the Second World War on the lives of the inhabitants of Romney Marsh. After the British defeat at Dunkirk and the fall of France, Hitler's army and air force were just 20 miles away from Romney Marsh across the English Channel. The Marsh was on the front line, and for five difficult years the local people faced the direct threat of German invasion and air attack. The author records their role in the war and vividly brings back to life the everyday realities and intense atmosphere of those troubled times. The book describes the ancious intial efforts made to organize the defence of the Marsh in the early days of the confrontation, particularly at Lydd which was - and still is - a garrison town. It goes on to record the most significant events of the time - the capture of German spies, plans for the evacuation of children and sheep, the Battle of Britain, advanced landing grounds, flying bombs, PLUTO, and the eventual victory celebrations. These episodes are recollected by the participants who found themselves at the centre of the civil defence operations of southern Britain. In particular, the author quotes the Home Guardsmen and the Land Girls, the lifeboatmen and the police, members of the 'Secret Army', and the ordinary working inhabitants of the Marsh who played such an important part in the wartime economy.
