By March 2006 about three years worth of research and writing
had led to the publication of twenty five local history articles and I
thought that the time had come to bring these together in one volume. I
made contact with a leading publisher of local history books, Tempus
Publishing, who agreed to publish Tales From the East Riding later in the
year. The book gave me the opportunity to revise and extend some of the
earlier pieces (including Wawne Ferry) and to write some new ones. The
summer of 2006 saw attempts to discover the location of the sunken American
warship the Bonhomme Richard off the coast north of Flamborough Head. I
therefore thought it appropriate to write something on the life and
controversial career of its captain, John Paul Jones, who fought a
desperate naval engagement against the Royal Navy off the Yorkshire coast
in 1779.
