This stunning full-color collection traces the development of Ashton-under-Lyne and the changes which, over the decades, have seen the town become the center of Tameside. Most of the cotton mills of this former mill town have now vanished (though some remain as apartments or factory units), but Ashton’s bustling market place and Victorian market hall still occupy center ground in the town. Here, in vivid color, the author captures Ashton’s landmarks and traces the story of an evolving community and its people. With more than ninety images, old and new, it will delight residents and visitors alike.

Descrizione libro Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Ashton-under-Lyne usually shortened to Ashton is a town in the foothills of the Pennines, some six miles east of Manchester. There has been a township on the site since the Middle Ages, and the area saw much expansion and development during the Industrial Revolution. Ashton, traditionally part of Lancashire, is, today, the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Tameside. The town has witnessed many changes over the past century, some of which are captured in this volume. Archive images and full-colour modern-day photographs, taken from approximately the same location, are used to compare and contrast the Ashton of yesterday and today and to put on record some of the faces of this constantly evolving modern town. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Codice articolo GOR008424021
