A story of triumph over early disappointment and heartbreak The outbreak of the Great War is imminent, In Portsmouth, submariner Peter Lloyd marries Eve Mailer. By 1923, Eve, now living alone with her baby, Penny, has returned to her former work in a department store. The owner of the store, Robin Tranter, has always been interested in her welfare. Eve later leaves the store to work for Lilian Sayer, a milliner who has decided to move her business to London. Eve learns that Robin Tranter's wife has died. Also employed by Lilian is Gerald Stack. He and Eve become close, and together they befriend a little boy called Freddie. The Millinery flourishes, but Eve decides to return to Portsmouth. With her departure, Lilian loses interest in the millinery and buys a bookshop, which she asks Gerald to manage. They retain the services of a mature assistant, Margaret Venn, who has worked in the shop since leaving school In 1940, before leaving Portsmouth to becoming a nurse in London, Penny changes her name by deed poll. Inevitably the war begins to impinge on the lives of them all. When hostilities end, Penny, quite by chance, goes to live in the house in which her mother and father began their married life.
