Before choppers, there was the bobber. When American-brand motorcycle owners needed to change their rear tires decades ago, the rear fender featured a hinge near its center that would flip up to make room for the tire to be removed. At some point ,an enterprising rider decided to permanently remove the hinged rear portion of the fender - shortening the fender like the "bobbed" hair cuts popular during those days - or so the theory goes. The tradition of stripping down to a bike's bare essence and celebrating its simpler forms - making a bobber - was begun.

As these lean, mean machines come roaring back onto the scene in a big way, this book offers a look at where the bobber came from, where it’s going, and what it’s about. With over 200 exclusive photographs of the most cutting-edge bobbers, biographies of the men and women who build them, and inside stories on top shops like Indian Larry, Von Dutch Kustoms, Orange County Choppers, Arlen Ness, Mitch Bergeron, and more. This book captures the rebel spirit of the ultimate custom bike as never before.Publisher's Note: This edition includes a poster on the reverse of the book's jacket.

Recensione:
captres the rebel spirit of the ultimate custom bike as never before. every bobber is beautifully photographed, emphisizing the smooth edges and geometric shapes, creating a whole new dimension and perception for the reader. --Born to ride

Art of the Bobber traces the emergence of custom motorcycles and introduces us to the machines of today that are upholding the rebellious culture of the original Bobber. The pictures are the showcase of this book. Art of the Bobber is much like its subject matter, stripped down and raw with power and grit. Today the Bobber retains its original image, short, low and fast, and Drate and Salavetz showcase these bikes with mastery. --American Cycle

This book is a large 224 page full colour collection of the modern interpretation of the Bobber motorcycle. Based mainly on Harley or Harley derived engined bikes it reads like a whose who of the modern American bike builder scene. With bikes from the late great builders Indian Larry and Johnny Chop alongside a brace of cool new Indian Chiefs from Kiwi Indian. Russell Mitchell s in there with one of his back to basic s Exile bikes. There are a host of names from the Biker build off TV series along side several lesser known builders with over 70 bikes featured. Most bikes are given a two page spread (with a couple of one page exceptions) which includes good clear photography with close up shots of the more interesting features. A tech spec sheet listing all the components used in the build and some of the features have a little background on the bike and the builder. There are a handful of bikes that warrant a four page or more feature including several bikes from Indian Larry and the Indian Larry Legacy, Kiwi Indians Flathead Bobber chief, bikes by Jailhouse Choppers and many more. A couple of bikes really jumped out at me, one was the Klock Werks Cherry Bomb a rigid Springer forked bike with a steel tractor seat and dropped bars that just looked so right and the other really surprised me as it comes from those masters of the theme bike Orange County Choppers, this bike is pure retro and looks like it could easily have been built back in the day with its Avon SM tyres, original style frame and Forks. I guess the only give away to me is the rear disc and the custom fuel tank. This book is a real pleasure to read and it certainly covers just about every aspect of the modern Bobber style, though some of the bikes featured in my opinion just do not cut it. On the whole it is a good representation of what is happening on the scene today in America. If you are planning a new build but you just can t work out what you want to achieve you could do a lot worse than pickup this book, if you can t find a bike in here that suits you then maybe a Bobber isn t for you. --Brit Chopper magazine
