A book has been published charting the history so far of the Rolls-Royce powered Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Last tuesday, the aircraft succesfully completed its maiden flight, powered by Trent 1000 engines, which were designed, developed, and tested at Rolls-Royces civil aerospace division in Sinfin. The first test flight is a crucial milestone in the development of the aircraft, which features new technology to make it more enviromentally friendly. Aviation journalist Guy norris and photographer Mark wagner have produced a book called Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which gives a behind-the-scenes insight into the aircraft's development. --Derby Evening Telegraph, December, 2009...the book concentrates on its development and construction and on the systems found in other machines that had an influence in its design. As this will be in direct competition with Airbus designs much thought has gone into it. For instance a great deal of composite material is used in its construction. Compared with the comparable Airbus, Boeing have stated that with the enviseged structure depending on this version it would be between 20,000 to 40,000lb lighter than its nearest rival - the A330-200, and would be able to fly 1700nm further. This machine is packed with innovative ideas: for instance it is the first commercial airliner to have 'fly-by-wire' brakes - but you will have to read the book to learn more. Boeing has had a turbulent ride over the last few years with delay after delay with this project. all this is described fully in the text, which is complemented with a large number of colour photographs that will give the reader an idea of just how complex the design and construction of a new aircraft is. Combining the writing of Norris, a senior editor with Aviation Week & Space Technology, and Wagner s professional photography, this is a good pre-flight history of the airliner s troubled but also path-breaking development. Briefly tracing the 787 s forebears, the authors related the brief and sad story of the mis-conceived Sonic Cruiser that fell flat with customers. Moving on to the 787, we see how early artist renderings bore little relationship to the final airplane; that handsome shark-like fin, for example, eventually became just another jetliner tail in the end. But the real stories here and why the airplane is important, as well as why it is late are its extensive use of composite materials and the global outsourcing of component design... Norris tells the story straight as one of breakthroughs and breakdowns, while Wagner s often striking photos bring the text to life.
