Frustrated with the pace of getting logs to mills by river, steam tractor, or even horse team, lumber baron T. A. Peterman experimented with adapting early automobile technology. In 1939, the remarkable logging trucks he’d refashioned out of surplus army trucks finally went on sale to the public and Peterbilt was launched. This illustrated history follows Peterbilt from its beginnings to its emergence as one of the world's most successful semi truck manufacturers.

Veteran trucking author James Beach highlights the models that have made Peterbilt such an outsize presence in the trucking industry, as well as those trucks that figure prominently in the Peterbilt story. From the classic “iron nose” and “narrow-nose” butterfly hood, to the tilt-cab cab-over-engine model; from the high cab model and first tilt hood to fiberglass and flat “pit style” fenders; from the rarest Peterbilt ever manufactured (a mere 10 of the 346) to the company’s flagship truck (the 379, built from 1987 through 2007), these are the trucks and features, the innovations and marvels of engineering, detailed and richly illustrated in this book, that have made Peterbilt a name to be reckoned with in trucking worldwide.

Recensione:
This a Great book to add to a Peterbilt Collection, I was Hoping for More Cabover Coverage in the Cabovers section in the end, But There was no 362E mentioned(362 enhanced model) History is there, Just as in Rasmussens Book, There are a couple B/W pics from Ron Adams, and others that I have seen before, and a few I have not. Its basically a Book focusing on Custom Petes, Look at the Cover.I was disapointed the Famous Tnn Big Rig Custom old 362 was not there. And no 379 X pics sadly.only a mention. And not enough 389 shots, or legacy class edition 379(last 379) pics. But I tell you what, I still like the book despite its few shortcomings.I would recommend it to True Peterbilt Fans like myself. --Jose Lopez

a book crammed with impressive images of Peterbilt trucks. The book takes us through the history of the company form its beginnings in 1939, and charts its life and products. there are some fabulous shots of Peterbilts at work (my preference) as well as some of them at shows. There are bizzare Peterbilts - including a working truck that has been customized to incude trick suspension that lowers the fornt end to within a cat's whisker of the ground, and a Convertible Pete built from the remains of a burnt-out wreck - to the sublime, including models that have undergone aerodynamic treatment. Historically, the United States of America's trucking industry used to be fairly awash with cab-over rucks. But the Surface Transportation Act passed by Congress in 1982 abolished overall length limits, and convetional ( bonnetted) trucks soon became the norm. Now, cab-overs make up just a small percentage of trucks in the US. interestingly, the best-looking Peterbilt is, in my opinion, the Model 372 cab-over, produced from 1988 to 1993. it is captioned as one of Peterbilts most aerodynamic models, and has an almost futeristic appearence. Another stunning shot shows a 352, 110-inch big-cab Pete cab-over that closly resembles a Kenworth. Working for the Tri-State Motor Transit Co, it hauls goverment and military equipment and is covered in raod grime. Generally the shots of bonneted versions depict well-kept and preened trucks that clearly have drivers who are very conscientus. As the reader progresses through the book ( althoguh it starts of showing the last-ever 359 legacy Class Edition truck to roll off the Production line at Peterbilt Motor's Denton, texas truck plant in 2007), he can see the gradual evolution of Peterbilts, starting with the flat-fronted, square-on designs to the more rounded versions to meet the needs of the more efficiency-conscious industry. These include models 377, 378, 357. 385, 386 and 387 (which shares the same cab shell as the Kenilworth T-2000). --Trucking, June, 2009
