Created by an act of Congress in 1862 and surviving intact as one of only seven Class I railroads in North America today, the Union Pacific is rightly considered by many to be the quintessential U.S. railroad. Its history has featured key figures and events in the annals of railroading and affected all quarters of the American Midwest and Southwest. This illustrated history follows the Union Pacific from its formation and through such landmark events as the completion of the transcontinental railroad, right up to the railroad’s current role in the continent’s current transportation infrastructure. The book recaptures the drama of the railroad’s perilous formative years, its weathering of economic disasters like the Great Depression, its boom times in the mid-twentieth century, the subsequent decline of passenger services, and the UP’s role in the rail industry’s merger-mania from the 1970s through the 1990s. From engineering lore to a look at the UP’s crack passenger services, this account is illustrated throughout with historical images in color and black-and-white, as well as modern photographs and fascinating print ephemera.

Recensione:
America s first transcontinental railroad was built between 1863 and 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad, connecting Council Bluffs, Iowa, with Alameda in California. Opened for through traffic on May 10, 1869, with the driving of the Last Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah, this railroad revolutionised the population and economy of the American West. It was the culmination of a decades-long movement to build such a line and represented one of the greatest technological feats of the 19th century. Most workers on the Union Pacific were either ex-army veterans or Irish emigrants - the Central Pacific relied mainly on Chinese labourers - and the company also employed many ex-army men as engineers. Generously illustrated with historic posters, drawings and photographs, this new book follows the Union Pacific s complex history from that original pioneering transcontinental link to the present day, when it has become the largest railroad in the United States and is second only to the federal government as a landowner. Authors Joe Welsh and Kevin J. Holland brilliantly bring to life the fascinating story of this illustrious railroad --New Classics, december, 2009
