The F-15A entered service in 1972 as "the first dedicated USAF air superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre." More than three decades and myriad models and variants later, the F-15 is still the U.S. Air Force's premiere air superiority weapon, a veteran of U.S. conflicts as recent as Operation Desert Storm and presently serving in the air forces of U.S. allies around the world. F-15 Eagle at War, featuring the spectacular aerial photography of author Tyson V. Rininger, follows the design, manufacture, and performance of the F-15 from its first appearance through its service in various Cold War and contemporary conflicts. The book profiles each model and upgrade in technology up to the F-15C, D, and E models that served in the Persian Gulf, where they claimed 36 of 39 Air Force victories in air-to-air combat. It is a fitting and thoroughly fascinating tribute to this celebrated aircraft and icon of the U.S. Air Force.

Recensione:
The title '...at War' is a little misleading because it also chronicles the concept and development of the aircraft. The F-15 fisrt took to the skies in 1972 and has been on the American inventory for over 35 years. As with many war-planes, the F-15 was creates out of necessity, mainly in response to advnaces in aircraft design by the Soviet Union. one of the problems was that many American aircraft were designed to fight at a distance, using missiles, but as it turned out in the Vietnam War, much of the combat was done at close quaters where the missile was not as effective and, as you did not have a gun and the enemy did, things could get a little tricky. Chapter one covers all these problems and how it came about that new types of aircraft were needed. The following chapter covers the development of the F-15 and then we proceed to its war service, althoguh some of it is 'cold' rather than 'hot' war. the book continues with a chapter covering the F-15E Strike Eagle, followed by the weapon loads and finally a discussion on its successor. As with all the books in this series there are plenty of colour photographs, all in colour, and these are supplemented with some colour profiles of ordnance- something that will be of use to the modeller. --Model Aircraft Monthly, May, 2009
