This book is particularaly interesting as it avoids the common generalization of books and does so by concentrating on one function of railroads in the United States. for more than 150 years, mining and railways have been closely linked and the book takes you through the history of this relataionship over the years. It explores the ' coal roads' past and present, and the traction that developed to operate hem. There is quite stunning photography amongst the illustrations, inlcuding massive trains of coal laden wagons snaking their way across the central American plains, pulled by up to five locomotves coupled together. Brian Solomon is one of today's most accomplished railway historians. He has authored more than thirty books about railroads and locomotive power, and his writing and photography have been featured in the world's top rail publications, including Trains, Railway Age, Passenger Train Journal, and RailNews. He divides his time between Massachusetts and Ireland.Patrick Yough has worked as an environmental consultant in the utility industry since 1990. His photography and writing have been featured in Trains and CTC Board, and he contributed to the Voyageur Press titles Conrail and Railroads of Pennsylvania. Patrick resides in Williamsville, New York.
