Surfing, Jack London remarked, is “a royal sport for the natural kings of earth.” The greatest of those natural kings grant readers an audience in this glorious celebration of the world’s best surfers. Part exquisite picture book and travelogue to the top of the world, part biography and reference guidebook, Legends of Surfing profiles one hundred great surfers, men and women, from throughout the world. In life stories, and in exclusive interviews--which only the surfing icon Duke Boyd could have pulled off--stellar surfers such as Wayne Bartholomew, Tom Curren, Andy and Bruce Irons, Duke Kahanamoku, Dave Kalama, Gerry Lopez, Rob Machado, Mark Occhilupo, and Kelly Slater give us a rare firsthand look at what it’s like, in this crowded world, to “seek and find the perfect day, the perfect wave, and be alone with the surf and his thoughts.” (John Severson, Surfer magazine, 1960)

Recensione:
A record book, reference, and gift book all in one, covering surfers, board shapers, filmmakers, surf culture and more! Surfing is more popular than ever, and surf legends are today public stars and household names-from ironman Laird Hamilton and seven-time world champ Kelly Slater, to musician Jack Johnson. Surfing, Jack London remarked, is 'a royal sport for the natural kings of earth.' To stand on top of a wave is to have a throne on top of the world. In a new book by a man that has shaped the surfing industry as it is today, more than 180 surfers have been profiled. All have had a significant impact on the surfing world, from Duke Kahanamoku to Kelly Slater. Pioneering surfriders, pipeline masters, board builders, tow-in surfing giants and women waveriders, surfing's media and counterculture are all included. Part picture book, part biography and reference guide, Legends of Surfing is packed with over 200 photographs by Jeff Divine. Other images come from the scrapbooks of legendary surfers themselves as well as archives of other master shooters. In exclusive interviews, Stellar surfers such as Andy and Bruce Irons, Duke Kahanamoku, Lisa Andersen, and Kelly Slater give us a rare first hand look at what it's like to live to surf. Author Duke Boyd is himself a legend of surfing-he's co-founder of Hang Ten surf wear and his current Duke Boyd surf line. He's also one of the few people anywhere who knew many of the surf pioneers as well as champions of today. There's never been a surfing book like this; with interviews and rare photos that only surfing insider Duke Boyd could collect. The Foreword is written by Steve Pezman, publisher of The Surfers Journal. He writes: 'Duke has always urged those around him to be all they can be, myself included. The ultimate romantic when it comes to amplifying the inner qualities of riding waves that become compelling to all surfers, Duke has always been taken by the rich human pageantry of the surfing individuals that makes up the core sport. You had to be a surfer to know the feeling, and Duke was a surfer.' --Surfing Waves, November 2009.....When a surfer with the heritage of Duke Boyd starts to compile a book then you know there is a good chance that it will tick all the right boxes. He created two of surfing most influencial brands, Hang Ten and Lightening Bolt, that pretty much set the ball rolling with regards to surf apparel and his influence can be seen today in modern day surfing giants like Quiksilver, Rip Curl and Billabong. He knew which way surfing was going way back in 1963 and its clear that he still has an incredible knowledge of surfing and its aficionado s. Legends of Surfing is his attempt to document the rich human pageantry of the surfing individuals that make up the sport. In this he hits the target. Boyd has grouped over 180 surfers from his bulging address book under the titles of Pioneers , Legendary Big Wave Surfriders , Filmmakers , Photographers and Progressive Surfriders to name a few and gives all of his chosen surfers a brief description and surmises their impact on surfing. This book gives a broad feel for the heroes of surfing but its lack of depth is a flaw. It s almost impossible to summarise a surfers, say Tom Curren s, impact on surfing in just three paragraphs. The book does however provide a wonderful showcase for Jeff Divine s and Tom Severson s talent behind the lens. Legends of Surfing is simply illustrated but packed with photographs that provide a real visual understanding of the history of surfing. You could try to describe Greg Noll but nothing sums him up like the picture of him standing on the beach, 10 ft board leaning against his shoulder against a backdrop of a 30ft wave. In short Legends of Surfing would make a great coffee table book for the surfer who wants to know a little bit more about surfing s pioneers and the surf --surf academy, december, 2009
