In 1958 George Smith started a small company called S & S Cycle. His mission: “To make all bikes go faster.” Fifty years later, S & S Cycle is everything Smith envisioned. To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the world’s premiere builder of aftermarket V-twin motorcycle engines and components commissioned custom motorcycles from fifty top builders. The competition that grew out of this challenge unfolds in the pages of S & S Presents Today's Top Custom Bike Builders, which showcases the splendid bikes built for S & S’s fiftieth anniversary show. The book, beginning with a brief history of S & S Cycle, features four-page spreads on each motorcycle, along with profiles of the builders--including Chica, Cory Ness, Paul Cox, Jerry Covington, Jesse Rooke, Redneck Engineering, Arlen Ness, Kim Suter, Brian Klock, Kendall Johnson, Roger Bourget, Rick Fairless, Fred Kodlin, and Paul Teuttel Sr. With illustrations by master custom-bike photographer Michael Lichter, this is as much a celebration of the custom builder’s art as it is a tribute to S & S Cycle’s accomplishment.

Recensione:
Written by Howard Kelley, with stunning photography by Michael Lichter, S & S Cycle's long awaited book in celebration of the bikes comissioned for their 50th anniversary celebrations is now available. --American Motorcycle Dealer, August, 2009--S&S Cycles is one of the world s leading aftermarket v-twin engine suppliers to the custom bike market and they came up with a brilliant and unique concept to celebrate their 50th Anniversary in June 2008. Compare and buy motorcycle books They invited 50 of the world s top custom bike builders all to build bikes using engines from the S&S range and then ran a competition to pick the best. The trick was to host the judging at one of the best custom biking celebrity parties you can imagine at the home of S&S Cycles in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Then S&S came up with an equally brilliant concept for a perpetual reminder of that great celebration. They collated the most stunningly detailed studio images of all those bikes and assembled them into the custom bike coffee-table book of all custom bike coffee-table books. It really is that good! Now available in the UK, S&S Cycles presents Today s Top Custom Bike Builders features 224 pages crammed with the most impressive array of custom motorcycles you ll ever likely see in one collection and, like the S&S Cycles competition itself it s divided up into six different sections determined by engine type. The really cool thing that this book shows about custom building is the incredible range of styles and interpretations. Okay, not all of them might be to individual taste, but the engineering work, not to mention ingenuity that s gone into creating such masterpieces is just mind-boggling. The S&S 50th competition attracted builders from all over the world including two top Brit-based legends: Nick Gale, who built the café-racer styled Little Miss Dynamite for Ace Café owner Mark Wilsmore, and Paul Beamish of Krazy Horse Customs, who turns out some awesome choppers, but also tipped a nod to the old British café style to build Krazey Racer for the S&S 50th. All the images in the book are the work of one man: Michael Lichter. If you know your custom bikes, and you know your custom bike literature, then you ll know Lichter is the photographer. No one does custom bike studio art like he does. Crisp, clean, incredibly-detailed images of the bikes, and beautifully composed portraits of the gnarly dudes who created them. And to pen the bike notes, S&S got one of top custom bike writers in the business, Howard Kelly. Not only has Kelly worked on some of the top chopper magazines in the States, he was formerly communication manager for S&S Cycles so he really has an inside line on the custom business. Put simply, the quality of pictures, words and production of this book befits the subject matter in every way. Pure class. S&S Cycles presents Today s Top Custom Bike Builders is written by Howard Kelly with photography by Michael Lichter. --Motorcycle News, October 2009

A new hardcover book by author Howard Kelly and photographer Michel Lichter revelas the many and varied machines assembeled around the world to sompete at S7S's 50th anniversary celebrations: company history, forward by Jay Leno and 223 pages of beautifully photography with profiles of each builder --Cycle News, November, 2009

Those who have been living in a cave for the last few years might not have noticed that S & S Cycles - the premier after market specialists in the Harley-Davidson sector - celebrated 50 years of Proven Performance in 2008, and that as part of their anniversary party they invited the world's top 50 builders to build a bike based round one of their motors, in a special limted edition form. With a forward by none other than Jay Leno, and preceeded by a brief history of S & S, this si the record of those bikes and,a s suggested by the title, their builders. Former S & S PR man and journalist Howard Kelley provides a brief backgorund to each build and builder, teaming up with world-renowned photographer Michael Lichter who provieds his usual stunning images - including a formally-posed portrait ofthe builders with their bikes. This is a stunning book to grace any coffee table, with the photographs reproduced flawlessly on a very high grade of gloss paper within a robust, embossed binding. Each shot is a calender shot, each painstakingly picked out from its original studio background to show these masterpieces in glourious isolation, and if you don't come away with a desire to build something yourself, and a massiv amount of respect for those who have put these together, you're probably reading the worng maagzine. Don't expect to like every bike: these are fifty of the world's most creative engineers, and they have very different, original ideas, each triggering a reaction, challenging your sensibilities. A moment captured in time, that will be as interesting when S & S celebrate their 100th anniversary. --American-V, December, 2009
