From Booklist:

This biographical reference work covering 89 Chinese women from the sixteenth century B.C. to those born at the end of the Quing Dynasty (1911) uses selection criteria found in Notable American Women (Belknap, 1980): "The individual's influence on her time and field; the importance and significance of her achievement; the pioneering or innovative quality of her work; and the relevance of her career for the history of women." The editor was assisted by faculty of Wuhan University, Wuchang, along with other Chinese and U.S. scholars. Her goal was to identify role models for young Chinese women. The volume is arranged chronologically with introductory sections describing the historical background. The entries within each section are also chronological by birth date of the subject. Each entry contains dates if known, a summary of career and accomplishments, and a bibliography. The entries are signed with the names of the contributors and the translators, and sources for each entry are identified. A list of Chinese dynasties and subgroups opens the work, while an index interfiling subjects, names, titles, and phrases completes the volume.Women's history in China is not well known outside of royal figures, so these pages provide a sense of Chinese women not only as rulers but as community leaders, advisors, warriors, writers, business women, artists, and calligraphers, as well as wives and mothers, daughters and sisters. Examples range from Fu Hao (ca.1040 B.C., "The earliest female general of the Shang dynasty") to writer Ding Ling (1904-1986). The rich source material includes stone carvings, diaries, court records, and genealogical records, among other resources. The value of this work rests in its ability to inform and educate many in the West about significant Chinese women throughout history. Although it might not be a necessary purchase, the volume could be a useful addition to reference collections in public, community-college, or university libraries that support an interest in or a curriculum on Chinese history.
