9780765680679: Postwar America: An Encyclopedia Of Social, Political, Cultural, And Economic History ( 4 vol set )

From the outbreak of the Cold War to the rise of the United States as the last remaining superpower, the years following World War II were filled with momentous events and rapid change. Diplomatically, economically, politically, and culturally, the United States became a major influence around the globe. On the domestic front, this period witnessed some of the most turbulent and prosperous years in American history. "Postwar America: An Encyclopedia of Social, Political, Cultural, and Economic History" provides detailed coverage of all the remarkable developments within the United States during this period, as well as their dramatic impact on the rest of the world. A-Z entries address specific persons, groups, concepts, events, geographical locations, organizations, and cultural and technological phenomena. Sidebars highlight primary source materials, items of special interest, statistical data, and other information; and Cultural Landmark entries chronologically detail the music, literature, arts, and cultural history of the era. Bibliographies covering literature from the postwar era and about the era are also included, as are illustrations and specialized indexes.

From Booklist:

In his preface, editor Ciment credits journalist Walter Lippman with coining the phrase the American Century to describe the period between the end of the second World War and the beginning of the twenty-first century. This four-volume encyclopedia considers the individuals, events, entities, movements, legislation, and cultural phenomena that figured in the development of postwar America into a world power. The signed, multipage articles, written by a team of more than 200 subject-area specialists, are arranged alphabetically. Each of these 550 main articles is followed by a brief bibliography. Entries address topics both general (Beauty, fashion, and cosmetics; Pornography) and specific (Beirut, Port Huron Statement). Every election between 1946 and 2004 receives separate coverage. Articles reflect events pulled from headlines (Central Park jogger, Scarsdale Diet murder) as well as social and political issues that evolved over years (Foreign aid, Medicine, Poverty, etc.). Sidebars of up to a full page in length address 137 topics that relate to major entries. For example, the entry Native Americans features two sidebars: one on the seizure of Alcatraz and another on Indian gaming. Although none of the entries are biographical, individuals frequently receive sidebar treatment. Occasional black-and-white illustrations (archival photos, poster and magazine-cover reproductions, political cartoons) are sprinkled throughout. An additional feature is the section on Cultural Landmarks. Organized by decade and then designated as either literature (fiction or nonfiction) or performance art (movies, television, theater, or radio), brief entries describe influential cultural offerings and discuss their impact. The choices include best-sellers, Broadway hits, and Hollywood blockbusters as well as political and social manifestos. The set concludes with an extensive topical bibliography, a detailed glossary, and three indexes: general, biographical and geographical. Each volume repeats the general index and also includes a topic finder, which groups articles into broad categories (Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, Legal Issues and Crime, etc.), as well as a set table of contents and a list of sidebars. Although these volumes do not offer the immediacy of reference sources that feature primary source documents, nor the visual allure of graphic-intense surveys, the in-depth articles provide detailed background information and address topics that align with standard curricula. Researchers will appreciate the breadth and depth of coverage. This unique and satisfying resource is recommended for large public, academic, and secondary collections that support upper-level U.S. history courses. McBroom, Kathleen

From School Library Journal:

Grade 7 Up—A wide range of events and issues from 1945 to the present is covered in this set. The 550 alphabetically arranged articles are well organized and will be accessible to readers who have little background on the topics. Short entries such as "Family Leave Act" cover a single page, while more comprehensive treatments of topics such as "Media and Politics" fill as many as 10 pages, providing clear views of how complex issues evolve over time. Many entries highlight one specific aspect of a subject in a sidebar: an "Agent Orange" feature in "Vietnam War" is an example. The "Topic Finder" that opens each volume groups related articles under 13 general headings, a useful tool for report writers. "Health and Medicine," for instance, lists over 40 topics related to the broader area. Cross-references further reinforce the interconnectedness of many events of the era. There are no biographical entries, but individuals are accessible through a separate index in the final volume, which also includes a geographical index. Controversial subjects receive balanced treatment, with summaries of opposing viewpoints rather than in-depth debate. Articles on the social impact of popular-culture topics, including movies, music, and sports, may appeal to report writers less interested in traditional subject matter. Captioned black-and-white photos accompany many articles, but the overall emphasis is more on the text, which succeeds in covering a complicated era in a style and format that is both useful and engaging.—Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR
