Grade 6-10-This brief overview of single-sex education introduces readers to the history of coeducation in the United States and presents arguments for and against girls-only and boys-only schools. The first two sections are devoted to background information on the controversy and past practices. Both successful and unsuccessful case studies of school systems around the country are cited. Noted experts like Michael Ruhlman, author of Boys Themselves (Holt, 1997), and representatives from the American Association of University Women weigh in with their opinions. Surveys and statistics stand out in bulleted text boxes and sources are cited in an extended bibliography. The following four sections make a case for and against sex-specific schools. Though the narrative isn't particularly passionate or lively, the facts are presented in a balanced fashion that contains enough information for students who are doing research or are interested in attending a single-sex school.

Gr. 7-10. Using the opening of East Harlem's Young Women's Leadership School as the pivotal point in her arguments, Cruz presents a strong, well-balanced debate about same-sex schools in the U.S. After a brief historical overview of education in America, she dedicates separate chapters to varying viewpoints, presenting arguments that are thorough and compelling. Numerous studies and quotations from scholars, teachers, parents, and students cover a wide range of opinions, illustrating both clinical and personal views that give young readers much to consider. Several options for improving education for both genders are highlighted, including single-gender colleges and military academies, separate campuses for boys and girls, time-sharing a single campus between the sexes, and single-gender classes within a coeducational setting. Cruz's approach makes clear that while there are no easy solutions, the subject is worth exploring. Roger Leslie
