Zhang (1895-1967) was the most famous and successful novelist in the Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies School of Chinese literature in the early 20th century. The movement was denounced as decadent, unhealthy, feudalist, the product of capitalist commercialization, and catering to the vulgar tastes of the urban petite bourgeoisie. But that was all before the liberalization of the late 1970s, explains McClellan (Chinese, U of Edinburgh), after which his work was printed and considerable scholarly attention came his way.
