Born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela in 1955 his early involvement with folk music eventually developed into formal studies with Leopoldo Igarza in Caracas. In 1976 he won a scholarship from the Venezuelan Cultural Council which enabled him to study for six years in London with the British composer John William Duarte during which time he obtained the Performers Diploma of the Royal College of Music. (ARCM-1980) From 1980 till 1983 he attended lessons on Analysis, Orchestration, Conducting, and Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Adrian Thorne. Upon returning to Venezuela (1983) he became a dominant influence in Guitar affairs and, among various posts, was appointed as the first Lecturer in Guitar at the University School of Music (I.U.D.E.M.). His guitar compositions and arrangements are played and recorded by John Williams, Rolando Villanzón, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Irina Kircher, Costas Cotsiolis among others. He is also a composer of symphonic music and over the years has received many commissions for works among others from the Berliner Symphoniker, Saint John Smith Orchestra of London, the Venezuelan Symphonic Orchestra as well as the world famous Venezuelan Youth Orchestra. Together with his wife, the great German guitarist/composer Irina Kircher, he travels the world playing concerts as Duo Montes Kircher. Because of the political chaos and anti-democratic ways of the military govertment in Venezuela, since 2000 Alfonso lives in Stuttgart where he has a very active and successful guitar class at the Stuttgarter Musikschule.
