From Booklist:

This is the newest addition to UXL's Reference Library line, and, like others in the line, it consists^B of an Almanac of the decade's major events, Primary Sources, and a volume of in-depth, multipage Biographies.

The authors have taken care to provide balanced and comprehensive coverage. Biographical entries cover counterculture icons (Bob Dylan, Abbie Hoffman), politicians and newsmakers (John F. Kennedy, Ralph Nader), mainstream celebrities (Vince Lombardi, Walter Cronkite), and individuals associated with specific events, such as Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey, the woman who was responsible for thwarting FDA approval of the drug thalidomide. Primary sources range from the Yippie Manifesto to Barry Goldwater's acceptance speech for the 1964 Republican presidential nomination. The almanac provides thoughtful essays on social and political developments: the antiwar movement, civil rights, feminism and the sexual revolution, and sweeping cultural changes in popular entertainment, sports, and the arts.

Aimed at students in middle and high school, the set offers many user-friendly features. Numerous sidebars and inserts provide background information and explain contextual details. The volume of primary sources supplements each selection with brief summaries of facts and insights designed to increase appreciation. Words, terms, and allusions are defined in margins. Judiciously selected black-and-white archival photographs accompany the text. The almanac suggests "Research and Activity Ideas" to offer students opportunities to apply their newfound knowledge (write your own manifesto, create a museum exhibition of 1960s artifacts, and so on). Each volume also features a time line, glossary, bibliographies of print and Web resources, and a volume-specific index. A cumulative set index is provided as a free paperback supplement.

The '60s are back in vogue. Public libraries and secondary schools will want to add this well-balanced and timely resource. Kathleen McBroom
