Illus: Drawings and illustrations in B&W Photos In B&W Bibliography Summary and Conclusions Index: General Hiersey was a professor of the History of Art at Yale University. "This book examines Italian Renaissance domestic architecture from the viewpoint of Pythagorean geometry, which was the principle mathematical philosophy inculcated in Renaissance architectural education. To the Pythagoreans, who were essentially number magicians, numbers were not only quantities, but qualities as well. They had fixed or predictable geometric, psychological, oral, and even personal natures. Thus, Professor Hersey maintains, the distribution of elements in a building, such as columns, doors, windows, and their proportional relationships were infused with meanings that we cannot recapture until we examine the mathematical context within which the buildings were designed."-from DJ.
