9780802139160: Women in Love and Other Dramatic Writings: Women in Love, Sissies' Scrapbook, A Minor Dark Age, Just Say No, The Farce in Just Saying No

Larry Kramer has been described by Susan Sontag as "one of America's most valuable troublemakers." As Frank Rich writes in his Foreword to this new collection of writings for the screen and stage, "his plays are almost journalistic in their observation of the fine-grained documentary details of life ... that may well prove timeless." The title work, the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Women in Love, is a movie "as sensuous as anything you've probably ever seen on film" (The New York Times). The screenplay is accompanied by Kramer's reflections on the history of the production, sure to be of interest to any student of film. This volume also includes several early plays, Sissies' Scrapbook, A Minor Dark Age, and the political farce Just Say No, illuminating the development of one of our most important literary figures. "Since his screenplay for Women in Love, Kramer has been a prophet of psychic health and catastrophe among us." -- from The American Academy of Arts and Letters citation

About the Author:

Larry Kramer's Faggots has been in print continuously since its original publication in 1978 and has become one of the best-selling of all novels about gay life. His play The Normal Heart, about the early years of the AIDS plague, holds the record for being the longest-running play at Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival and has been produced and taught all over the world. His companion play, The Destiny of Me, was a runner-up for the Pulitzer and won an Obie and the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play of 1992. His other plays include Just Say No, about the Reagans, and Sissies' Scrapbook, which was produced by Playwrights' Horizons in 1973. His screenplay adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love, a film he also produced, was nominated for an Oscar. He is currently at work on The American People, a very long novel about the plague.

As an AIDS activist, Kramer is the cofounder of Gay Men'sHealth Crisis, the founder of ACT UP and of the Treatment Data Project, and the author of Reports from the Holocaust: The Story of an AIDS Activist.

Kramer, who is HIV positive, was born in Connecticut, grew up in Washington, D.C., graduated from Yale, lived in London for ten years as a film executive, and now lives in New York and Connecticut with his lover, architect David Webster.

He is a recipient of the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and he is also the first creative artist and the first openly gay person to be honored by a Public Service Award from Common Cause.

Susan Sontag said this about him: 'Larry Kramer is one of America's most valuable troublemakers. I hope he never lowers his voice.'

Review:

"A visual stunner and very likely the most sensual film ever made." -- New York Daily News

"Ken Russell and Larry Kramer have transformed the novel-of-ideas into a movie-of-action . . . almost as romantic as something by a Bronte." -- Vincent Canby, The New York Times

"Kramer has been a prophet of psychic health and catastrophe among us—a prophet unmatched." -- American Academy of Arts and Letters citation (Praise for Larry Kramer)

"Kramer is a moralist in immoral times; by shooting with a big cannon, he does heat up the place." -- Linda Winer, Newsday (Praise for Just Say No)

"Kramer ruthlessly strips his characters . . . until their passions . . . come pouring out, in drama that may well prove timeless." -- Frank Rich

"Larry Kramer has taken this novel . . . extremely seriously . . . A superbly realized film, a success on the highest possible level." -- Penelope Mortimer, The Observer (London)

"Lawrentian themes blaze and gutter. The sooty mind-crushing coal mines . . . are re-created in all their malignance." -- Time

"Risks everything by turning rage to farce—and back again. I’m ready to go anywhere Kramer wishes to take me." -- Gordon Rogoff, The Village Voice (Praise for Just Say No)

"The dialogue is deliriously artificial and crackling." -- Stephen Holden, The New York Times (Praise for Just Say No)

"Women in Love is a superbly realized film, a success on the highest possible level." -- Penelope Mortimer, The Observer (London)
