The first book in English exclusively devoted to an analysis of the films of one of Spain's most important film directors, Víctor Erice. Drawing on original essays, reprints, and new translations from an international group of writers, this anthology will help open a window into a deeper appreciation of Erice's three haunting feature-length films—The Spirit of the Beehive [El espíritu de la colmena] (1973), El Sur (1982), and Dream of Light [aka The Quince Tree Sun, El sol del membrillo] (1992).
The book opens with a wide-ranging introductory essay on major themes in Erice's films and writings, and an extensive interview with the director in which he talks about the strategies and philosophies behind the making of his films. Translations of three of his writings on early cinema follow.
Award-winning essayists, film critics, and scholars then join their voices with those of a new generation of writers in an examination of the aesthetic, historical, and sociological forces at work in Erice's films. This broad array of writings opens a window, not only onto three unforgettable films, but also onto twentieth-century Spanish society, and onto world cinema as it passes beyond its first 100 years. An Open Window: The Cinema of Víctor Erice will serve as an important resource to mark, and measure, the career of this director who, along with Bunuel, Saura, and Almodovar, has helped show the world the creative range of the Spanish Cinema.
