Library reading programs for very young children have blossomed across the nation over the last decade, encouraging in toddlers a fondness for the library and an excitement for the books to be found there. In an effort to promote a love of language in babies as young as three months old, scores of early childhood initiatives are beginning to sprout as well.
Aimed at children's librarians who work with infants and toddlers and their parents, this librarian-tested sourcebook provides ten ready-to-use activities for babies, five for pre-walkers, and five for walkers. Marino includes rhymes involving body movement, songs, fingerplays, circle games, and books in ways that teach parents how to interact with their young children while enriching language development and enhancing listening capabilities in the babies. Several of the rhymes are repeated in a separate section to help librarians and others in charge of children's programs present parents and caregivers with the tools they need to use rhymes and activities at home, in the car, or whenever and wherever they wish. A helpful bibliography lists some of the best picture books to use with babies and toddlers, rhyme collections, and numerous recordings that are suitable for very young children.
