This book is neither a catalogue raisonne, nor a compilation of weave data. Instead, it pays tribute to members of the Bauhaus whose names are not known to a larger public. Female students, who were among the first wave of women after WWI to aspire to membership of the professional design community, arrived at the school with an astonishing diversity of talents, convinced that this avant garde institution would accept them as equals. Many already had extensive training in the arts. High-spirited and anti-bourgeois, they participated on many levels in the life of the Bauhaus.Review:
Women's Work is an inspiring book for fiber artists and weavers like myself, and for all women who are striving to advance their work under difficult circumstances. The book is the story of the exquisite textile art from the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop in Germany from 1919 to 1933, and a tribute to these women's work. Whereas early American weavers were mostly housewives who used their craft for their homes and loved ones, the Bauhaus weavers designed fabrics for industry, and their innovations defined standards for modern design. When their workshop was about to close because of the war, they persevered and started a workshop in another country. If it hadn't been for these weavers moving to the United States and other countries, the art of weaving would not be as popular as it is today. All women can learn from these weavers and take strength from the hardships they endured. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Gloria Green
