For all who may have rejected the idea that doubt and faith are incompatible, but have not thus far been offered an adequate theological argument for their intuitive reaction, Rees presents a theological analysis of doubt as a positive and constructive element within the Christian experience of faith.

Dalla seconda/terza di copertina:
As human beings we wrestle with doubt in understanding faith; yet throughout Christian history doubt has been seen as inappropriate. Teachers and pastors have enjoined their people not to doubt, while theologians have sought to explain how faith is to be understood in a way that overcomes doubt. In Wrestling with Doubt, Frank D. Rees provides a theological analysis of doubt as a constructive element within the Christian experience of faith. He considers three theological frameworks, each of which offers an interpretation of doubt, and two life-story theologies that deal with faith and doubt. These approaches are shown to depend critically upon the concept of God: leading to the conclusion that an adequate understanding of the relation of doubt to faith is ultimately a theological issue, requiring an understanding of God appropriate to the personal dynamics of faith and doubt. Wrestling with Doubt presents a theological argument which includes and combines theological scholarship, biblical reflection, and pastoral experience. It is for all who may have rejected the idea that doubt and faith are incompatible, but have not thus far been offered an adequate theological argument for their intuitive reaction. It will also be useful for pastors and teachers, as a reference text in pastoral theology and as a resource in spiritual direction. Chapters are "The Modern Problem with Doubt," "Faith as Assent, Incompatible with Doubt," "The Word of God: Creating Faith, Excluding Doubt," "The Dynamics of Doubt and Faith," "Doubt and the Religious Self," "A Celebration of Doubt," "The Context of Doubt: Divine Conversation," "Faithful Doubt: Participation in the Divine Conversation," "Faith in Jesus: Belief and Doubt," and "Constructive Aspects of Doubt."?Doubt, uncertainty and scepticism are experiences of our times. But rarely, if ever, are they discussed with the depth of insight, sympathy and understanding that Frank Rees brings to them in this work. Here doubt is not merely an intellectual problem to be solved, or an existential anxiety to be overcome, but a lens through which the life of faith in God in all its postmodern complexity can be seen, examined and celebrated. . . . If theology were always this lively, this interesting and this accessible, its impact both within and beyond the confines of the church would be far more powerful than it usually is.? Graeme Garrett St. Mark?s National Theological Centre Australia?Doubt is a crossroad where believer and unbeliever meet, often in the heart of the same person. Ranging from biblical texts to the writing of great modern theologians to biographical accounts of religious experience, Frank Rees explores doubt as an authentic dimension of faith. This book combines keen intellectual analysis with pastoral sensitivity. Wrestling with Doubt is a rare accomplishment: a work that will enrich the thought and life of believers at the same time that it widens the circle of theological discussion to include those who are not sure they qualify as believers at all. Rees offers an original and persuasive account of a God who is not threatened by doubt and of a faith that is not displaced by it.? Mark Heim Andover Newton Theological School? In his book, Wrestling with Doubt, Professor Frank Rees has supplied a splendid study of the relationships between Christian faith and doubt. . . . Not only has Professor Rees supplied a useful resource for solid theological reflection on the relation of doubt to faith for the work of ministers and theological educators, perhaps more modestly and less directly, he has also offered a helpful guide for theologians who aim to do more in their reading than merely stay up-to-date in the most recent theological scholarship, who also seek tools and partners to aid them in their own struggles with doubt?and Professor Rees has performed this ministry in the spirit of the very God whom he characterizes in his book. Although this book clearly exhibits the excellent skills of a professional theologian, his argument discloses something equally as important, some of the most necessary qualities in a Christian theologian: compassion for others, sensitivity, honesty?in short, an authenticity suffused by love for both God and neighbor.? Jeff B. Pool Professor of Theology Brite Divinity School
