The youngest man elected to the office of the presidency, John F. Kennedy served as the 35th president of the United States until his assassination in 1963. With the immemorable words of his inaugural address, "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country," Kennedy began leading the nation on a quest for equal rights, national culture, and peace. From the unsolved mystery of his death to the rumors about his personal life, Kennedy's presidency fascinates many Americans. Written in an accessible A-to-Z format, The Kennedy Years is an invaluable introduction to Kennedy's work and influence. More than 350 biographical entries list key figures in his administration, and numerous appendixes feature primary source documents such as presidential speeches and executive decisions.

The Kennedy Years, a revision, is part of the publisher's Presidential Profiles series. It contains 250 biographies of people who played an important role in the Kennedy administration, either directly or indirectly. Alphabetically arranged, each profile includes the person's name, date of birth and (where pertinent) death, and offices held or occupation, followed by a detailed account of the person's contribution to the social or political scene. Coverage is restricted to Americans but encompasses individuals--John Glenn, Frank Sinatra, and Malcolm X, for example--who loomed large in the public eye.
Biographical profiles followed by appendixes: a chronology of events during the administration by year, month, and day; and lists of U.S. government officials, members of the Senate and Congress, governors who served during the time period. Also in the volume are cross-references to other volumes in the series in which an individual has an entry. A selection of primary documents and a bibliography complete the work.
Like others in the series, this volume is an excellent resource for the high-school researcher and public library user. The biographical focus makes it a good complement to other reference sources on the presidency. Carol Sue Harless

Grade 9 Up - Kennedy is a revised edition of a title originally published in 1976 as part of the "Political Profiles" series (Facts on File); Clinton is a new work in this new series. Each volume begins with a lengthy introduction that summarizes major events of each administration, beginning with the election campaign. Following this is an A-to-Z section of approximately 350 profiles in the first volume and 250 in the second. These concise biographical entries include major political figures from each term of office and discuss the relationship of the person to the administration. The articles in Kennedy cover only U.S. personalities, while those in Clinton include important world leaders. The volumes conclude with a chronology of the administration; lists of the members of Congress, the Supreme Court Justices, Executive Departments staffs, and state governors; and primary documents, which include the texts of speeches and treaties. A few average-quality, black-and-white photographs appear in each volume. The inclusion of primary sources makes these titles particularly valuable resources for research. - Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA
