Prairie potholes, the great lake deltas of the north, and other freshwater marshes play a vital role in maintaining a clean and plentiful water supply for wildlife and human use. The spawning of fish, feeding of waterfowl, water purification and retention, and erosion control are some of the functions of these wetlands. In this updated third edition, the author describes the components of the marsh, its physical structure and the many species of plant and animal life that populate it. Wetlands are dynamic communities, interaction of plant and animal life creates a flow of nutrients through the system that allows the marsh to function. Climatic conditions and changes in water level are factors that influence marsh communities. Weller takes the middle ground in the battle between those who wish to drain, fill and develop wetlands, and those who wish to leave these vulnerable areas untouched. He advocates the use of natural processes, such as water level control and the activity of muskrat populations, as tools to provide maximum long-term benefits with the least amount of ecological and aesthetic disruption.
