Arthur classifies the automorphic representations of special orthogonal and symplective groups in G in terms of those of GL(N). His main tool is the stable trace formula for G, which until recently was conditional on the fundamental lemma, which has now been established in complete generality and it all of its various forms. He also lays foundations for the endoscopic study of more general groups G, and suggests that the methods he introduces extend to groups that Ramakrishnan has called quasiclassical.
