Descrizione libro Condizione: Gut. XI, 312 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed jacket, slightly stained edge, otherwise very good and clean. / Leicht beriebener Umschlag, leicht angeschmutzter Schnitt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - In this major addition to Platonic scholarship, Zdravko Planinc offers a bold new interpretation of the Republic and the Laws. Arguing that scholars have misread these works for many years, he criticizes the common conception of Plato as a political idealist and challenges conventional interpretations of two of the most influential works in the history of Western civilization. Plato s political and moral philosophy, Planinc argues, is founded on an understanding of phronesis, or prudence, in the Aristotelian sense. Using techniques of textual commentary developed by Leo Strauss and Stanley Rosen and the Platonic scholarship of Eric Voe-gelin and Hans-Georg Gadamer, Planinc asserts that the literary form of the dialogues is based to a great extent upon Plato s systematic use of Homeric imagery and symbolism. Examining the texts as drama, he shows how the Republic anticipates the Laws, which he defines as the culmination of Plato's work. He demonstrates the inadequacy of the common interpretation of the sun, line, and cave images of the Republic, arguing that these three images in Socrates account of the good can only be understood if they are interpreted dramatically rather than metaphysically. Planinc s insightful examination of prudence in Plato s political philosophy is a singular contribution to the study of classics, politics, philosophy, and theology. - Zdravko Planinc is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. His articles have appeared in such journals as Political Science Reviewer, Dionysius, Canadian Journal of Law and Society, and History of Political Thought.
