In using tools provided by narrative theorists among them Seymour Chatman and Gérard Genette it is a departure in Homeric studies Richardson focuses on the role of the narrator in giving the reader access to the world of the story "how he leaves signs of his presence in the discourse." He discusses comparatively other works of fiction, principally novels of the last two centuries, to establish the uniqueness of Homer's art. -- In an appendix, Richardson uses a short, continuous passage from the Odyssey (Odysseus's journey by raft from Kalypso's island) to show how narrative devices discussed discretely in the preceding seven chapters are interwoven in one dramatic episode. -- In addition to extensive Notes and a Subject Index, Richardson provides an Index of Passages Cited for scholars who wish to refer to specific lines in the Iliad and the Odyssey.
