Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) has long been admired as one of the greatest German dramatists, and his plays, particularly Prinz Friedrich von Hamburg, are regularly performed in theaters throughout the world. He also wrote several stories and anecdotes, and these, ranging from the tragic love story of Das Erdbeben in Chill to the immensely complex fable of the horsedealer Michael Kohlhaas, have come to be acknowledged as masterpieces of prose fiction, without their equal in world literature. In this, the first full-length study of Kleist's stories to be published, Dr Dyer, an international authority on Kleist, examines the stories against the background of Kleist's life and works. Each story is dealt with in a separate chapter, and additional chapters deal with Kleist's life and the themes and style of his prose works. Quotations are given both in German and English, and the book contains a select bibliography. Dr Dyer combines scholarship and learning with sensitive literary analysis, and his book will interest both the ordinary reader and the student of German literature. Denys Dyer is Special Lecturer in German Literature at Oxford and a Fellow of Exeter College. 205 pages. Codice articolo WB011910
