Dieses 30minütige Werk, ursprünglich eine Ballettpartitur, ist für Streicher geschrieben und besteht aus drei Sätzen:"cumnock fair": Eine 12minütige Fantasie auf der Grundlage von Tanzmelodien des Cumnock-Komponisten John French aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Die Stimmungen reichen von spielerisch, rustikal, archaisch, unbeholfen, verträumt, ausgelassen, erhaben, brutal und grotesk bis zu mysteriös und nervenaufreibend."shambards": Erinnerungen an Burns'sche Volkslieder werden von neuen Tanzweisen unterbrochen, denen Fragmente aus der Wahnsinnsszene im 3. Akt von Donizettis Oper Lucia di Lammermoor zugrunde liegen, die wiederum auf einem Roman von Walter Scott basiert."shamnation". Tiefes Hämmern im Klavier wird zu einem Trommelschlag, der einen schnellen Reel mit Violinen begleitet und dabei drei Melodien verwendet und sich an die traditionelle achttaktige Struktur hält. Die Soloklavierstimme erscheint als Kontrapunkt zu den schottischen Themen, nach denen sich die Musik ihren Weg durch viele verschiedene Tonarten bahnt.
