9780856673276: Metalwork of the Islamic World: The Aron Collection

This superbly illustrated catalogue of Islamic metalwork from the Aron collection contains forty-four pieces ranging in date from the 9th to the 19th centuries. A highlight is a hitherto unpublished incense burner by a Mosuli craftsman of the 13th century. The catalogue begins with five informative introductory essays in which James Allan discusses Islamic metalwork produced in the Mediterranean area and in the Medieval Yemen, the history of incense burners in the Islamic Near East, the continuing use of classical libation vessels in Islamic culture and finally the complex question of Venetian-Saracenic metalwork. With over fifty drawings of comparative pieces, this book makes an important contribution to the study of Islamic metalwork. A detailed, fully illustrated catalogue of 44 entries ranging from a 9th- to 10th-century Iranian jug to a gilt copper ewer from Turkey, dating from the second half of the 18th century.

A very well cared for book. From the author "Nothing can explain it completely, not even a book. Only memory can hold together the full range of emotions and pleasures, study and work, that this collection contains. It is a part of my life, a beautiful oasis of peace and a demonstration that life is not only production, but also contemplation. Every object tells a story, and that is a treasure I shall never lose: it is part of me." Some objects included are Muhammad bin Khutlukh's incense burner, the great 14th century dish, and the Ottoman silver jug.
