9780857455147: Images of Power and the Power of Images: Control, Ownership, and Public Space

The commoditizing of the arts and popular entertainment is evidence of how the arts are seen as epiphenomenal and peripheral to the "real world." Aspects of the everyday are obscured and confounded in order to mythologize them and build authoritative pictures of so-called dominant values (family, community and nation, industry, fairness and equality) that bespeak pride and confidence in the social order. It is the aim of this volume to deconstruct and unsettle some of these constructed myths of social value. The contributors - from a range of sociological, anthropological and socio-cultural fields - explore a number of subjects ranging from an art trade festival, road-making in Peru, and mass housing to dividing walls and military operations in Jerusalem, and a Zen garden. The images and use of public space that they analyze represent political and social power in societies still caught in structures of inequality often taken for granted. By engaging a critique of contemporary cultural phenomena, they reveal the ideological role of imagery and imagination in a globalized context.
