Informazioni sull?autore

Huntly Strathearn Gordon was born in a Perthshire manse in 1898. Educated at Merchiston and Clifton College, he joined the army in 1916. After the war he studied medicine, before going to China with Shell Oil. Returning in 1926, he joined London Transport and rose to be Chielf Welfare Officer, in his spare time surveying archaeological sites with Sir Mortimer Wheeler. During the Blitz, he initiated food trains for the thousands sheltering in the Underground, and was awarded an MBE. He married twice, and had four children. Huntly Gordon died in 1982, and is buried at Kincardine Church in Strathspey.

David Gordon is Huntly Gordon's youngest son. Born in 1956, he went to Sherborne School and Sandhurst. He has been a soldier, parliamentary researcher and county councillor. A lifelong campaigner on environmental issues, his passions also include vintage vehicles and old houses. He lives in rural Somerset.

Dal risvolto di copertina interno

Nearly one hundred years have passed since the guns blazed over the ever-deepening mud of the Western Front. Names such as the Somme, Ypres and Passchendaele continue to resonate as the setting for the near-destruction of a generation of men. It is this aura of tragedy that makes Huntly Gordon's memoir - consisting mainly of his letters home from the Front - such a potent and moving account of the experience of war.

As the golden summer of 1914 drew to a close, the world the young Gordon had been preparing for at school was itself preparing for war. After leaving school in 1916 and an inadequate training course at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery. Reaching France in June 1917, he was soon at Ypres, getting his 'baptism' at Hell Fire Corner, and in due course fighting in the murderous battle of Passchendaele itself. After a bitter winter at Bapaume, his battery was engaged in a desperate series of rearguard actions that eventually helped turn the tide of the massive German offensive of Spring 1918.

Republished with significant new material and photographs unearthed by his son, David, The Unreturning Army remains as immediate, fresh and honest as the day those letters were written. And in recalling his experience of this 'Great War' - a conflict that seems inconceivable now - Huntly Gordon has given us an enduring and classic memoir; a poignant and extraordinarily human account of history as it happened.
