Descrizione libro Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Special Edition. Volume One only. Ex-Library, St. John's University;VG original maroon cloth, gilt titles and device to front cover, corners bumped, edges worn, hinges slightly strained, sticker to spine, library bookplate to front pastedown, otherwise very clean throughout. The Romance of Lancelot du Lac, published in two volumes in 1488, was the first Arthurian Prose Romance in French to be printed in France. The printing was shared between two houses: the first volume of the Lancelot was issued on 24th November 1488 in Rouen by the brothers Jehan and Gaillard Le Bourgeois; Volume Two appeared a few weeks earlier than Volume One and was the work of the Parisian printer Jehan du Pre. The Lancelot comprises not only the Lancelot proper, but also the Queste del Saint Graal and La Mort le Roi Artu. These works form what is known as the Vulgate Cycle of the Arthurian Romances. The French publishers selected a French version of the romances which was already old, well tried and very popular. The Lancelot was composed during the third decade of the thirteenth century by an anonymous prose writer, who claims within the text to be Walter Map, however th is authorship is denied by modern scholars. The author took the story of Lancelot and Guinevere, as it had been related in verse by Chretien de Troyes some fifty years earlier, and used it as the core of this immense romance of chivalry in which th is tragic ill-fated love is set against the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. In this work of genius, the author not only covered a vast canvas, but also incorporated into the chivalric adventures of the Arthurian heroes the Christian mysticism of the Quest of the Holy Grail. This romance, one of the longest pieces of French prose fiction, is a masterpiece of composition, comparable to Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur. It has never been fully translated into English, however significant portions were translated into English by Lucy Allen Paton and published as "Sir Lancelot of the Lake" by George Routledge & Sons, London 1929. Heavy tome, but our PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE WITH TRACKING. Codice articolo 020750
