Robert Smith began his journalistic career as a copy boy at the age of fifteen, and would go on to be the longest-serving editor of the Evening Express in Aberdeen. On retiring he became a prolific author of local history and walks in the North-East of Scotland. Robert died in 2008 at the age of eighty-four.Review:
'...a fine book. Few who read it will doubt his labours did indeed get a discernible answer from those "voices on the braes".' - Evening Express '...a book to be enjoyed time and again, before and after a serious visit into the heart lands of Aberdeenshire and Banffshire, to enjoy the tang of fresh air, distinctive peat and heather and the complete sense of being to "catch the voices in the air" of generations long since past.' - --History-Teaching Review
'no-one remotely interested in the history of Scotland's past should be without a copy of this fine, well-illustrated work' --Scots Magazine
