Elizabeth Thompson, later Lady Butler, was a phenomenon of 19th century British art. Though she herself never witnessed war at first hand, her battle scenes won her a popularity and critical success which no other British woman painter has ever approached. They also succeed in reviving British battle painting and in establishing its typical forms for a generation, so much so that it would not be an exaggeration to say that the standard representation of the ordinary British soldier in the period leading up to WWI, as the perfect embodiment of stoic virtue, even in the midst of danger and adversity, is largely her invention. This catalogue is the first large-scale survey of Butler's career ever published. It pays special attention to the reception of Butler's pictures in her heyday in the 1870s. It also, however, looks at those works, often never shown in public, painted many years after the artist's reputation had begun to fade. A number of late 19th century British battle pictures of the type influenced by her work are included.
