Goran has an injured leg and gets bored spending so much time in bed. When his mother turns out the light at dusk, however, Mr. Lilyvale knocks on the window and takes him to the Land of Twilight. Goran and Mr. Lilyvale walk and fly around Stockholm while people from the daytime world are asleep.
Goran drives a trolley and a bus. It doesn’t matter that he has a bad leg in the Land of Twilight. They eat candy that grows on trees in the park, play with bear cubs, and meet a moose. They even visit the King and Queen in the royal palace. At the end of each night’s journey, Mr. Lilyvale takes Goran home just before his mother comes and turns on the light.
This delightful story about the power of the imagination is set in a magical version of Stockholm and painted in beautiful twilight tones.

Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002), born Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson, was a well-known Swedish writer whose works renewed children's literature in Sweden and Scandinavia. Her best-known characters are independent and unconventional, including the untidy Pippi Longstocking, Karlsson, and Emil and his entertaining pranks.
Her books for children received many awards, including the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for Pippi Longstocking in 1973; the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1958; and the International Book Award from UNESCO in 1993. Astrid Lindgren's success as an author brought her into the public eye and she became involved in national debates on issues including taxation policies, nuclear power and the treatment of children, refugees and animals. She continued in public life until the age of ninety-one, when she suffered a stroke and stopped appearing in public. Astrid Lindgren passed away at her home in Dalagatan.
Marit Törnqvist was born in 1964 in Uppsala, Sweden, and studied illustration at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. She divides her time between the Netherlands and Sweden. In 2011, she was awarded a Golden Plaque from the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava, one of the most prestigious children's illustration awards. She has illustrated several of Astrid Lindgren's picture books, including A Calf for Christmas, Goran's Great Escape, and In the Land of Twilight, all published by Floris Books.
'Marit [Tornqvist]'s pictures of Stockholm by twilight are dreamlike, and very attractive.' -- Bookwitch 'In the Land of Twilight tells of Goran, who has a bad leg and is bored spending so much time in bed. But when darkness falls Mr. Lilyvale takes him to the Land of Twilight, where Goran drives a bus, eats candy from trees, and even visits royalty. Good reading skills from grades 2-3 will lend to an appreciation of this imaginative survey of a magical land of imagination where illness and disability are changed to wonder and amazement.' --Midwest Book Review 'In the Land of Twilight ... is a beautiful tale of escapism and the potential power of your imagination.' -- Early Years Educator "Tornqvist's atmospheric illustrations, the difference of the Swedish setting and the sense of wonder Lindgren evokes will, when the book is read aloud and revisited many times, speak powerfully to the concerns of young readers of 4 to 8." --Gillian Lathey, School Librarian 'A magical spiritual book.' --Juno
