After showing two of our most distinguished painters in successive Biennales, we have chosen one of our leading sculptors to represent Britain at the XLIIIrd Biennale. Tony Cragg may by familiar to visitors to other international events, such as Documenta and has already had important museum and gallery exhibitions in Europe and America, but almost all the work in this exhibition is being shown for the first time. A few earlier pieces and the catalogue itself serve to underline the essential continuity in the artist's approach to his subjects, but we intend that the display should evoke a fresh and imme- diate response from the viewer. Cragg conjures up a myriad of images in a multitude of materials, which delight, intrigue and test our reactions.
