Eliza Fen wick's gothic novel was first published in 1795. It explores through the letters between two young women, the effects of their very different upbringings. It warns against excessive sentiment
and the romantic daydreams women were
encouraged to amuse themselves with; it paints a
bleak picture of the dissatisfaction of women's lives,
of secrecy and betrayal, but points to friendship
between women as precious and prized, the only
solace in a threatening male world. The two women
in Secresy, one of whom lives in a secluded castle,
find their happiest moments in writing to each other
and in openly expressing an affection that seems
impossible in any other relationship.
