He taught moral philoso- phy at Marischal College, Aberdeen, where one of his pupils was Thomas Reid, who became the main representative of the Scottish school of common-sense philoso- phy. Editor Alexander Broadie notes that Turnbull was "the first of a long line of Scottish moralists to speak explicitly about the introduction of the experimental method of reasoning into moral subjects." Turnbull's Principles of Moral and Chris- tian Philosophy (1740) brings together moral philosophy, science, and theology in a distinctive synthesis. The work develops the theme that moral philosophy is a sci- ence that can be understood by using the same methodology as the other empirical sciences. In the first of two volumes, Turn- bull is principally concerned with arguing that the natural order and particularly its governing laws testify to divine providence and that the evidence is irresistible once it is laid out in a suitably scientific fashion. In the second volume, Turnbull focuses on the concept of God's moral governance of the world, a governance that is particularly at work in his recompense for our good and evil acts, so that "whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6/7 ) . The Liberty Fund edition of The Prin- ciples of Moral and Christian Philosophy is the first modern edition of this work. ISBN 9780865974562 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 910.
