In these eight short essays, three of which have been previously published, Middleton singlemindedly demolishes the placid image of fishing with moody meditations and dark travelogues. A couple of these pieces read like creative writing class drills, and more than one is marked by florid sentiment. Nonetheless, Middleton makes direct contact with the pulse of existence that fishing provides many people. For the author of The Earth Is Enough , his beloved home waters in the southern Appalachians are the real sources of personal memory, and in re-fishing the waters of his hardscrabble youth, he shows that "fishing is not an escape from life, but a deeper immersion into it."

From the book: "Hooking the little trout at Karen's Pool on Starlight Creek after all these years made me yearn again not for how my memory has shaped and reshaped that moment on this pool when I hooked my first trout but for the original experience itself, just that moment of pure undiluted excitement and joy and wonder, that moment of perfect magic and mystery, that mix of exhilaration and exhaltation that washed over me as that first trout hauled me into wildness, not as a thought or idea, but as a feeling, the way of things as they are." By the author of STARLIGHT CREEK ANGLING SOCIETY, THE EARTH IS ENOUGH, ON THE SPINE OF TIME, & THE BRIGHT COUNTRY. Critic's comments: "Harry Middleton's book is a specific tonic in an overscrutinized sport. He brings to fishing the lyric reverence of Roderick Haig-Brown, a McGuane, or Chatham." Jim Harrison "If fly fishing has any right at all to its self-proclaimed stature as the most literary of sports, it's because a few gifted writers like Harry Middleton continue to produce outstanding evocative books like "Rivers of Memory"." Paul Schullery This is a fine buy at this price, and a rare addition to any collector's library. I have been contacted by several individuals who questioned the authenticity of this signed book, believing that Harry died prior to the release of RIVERS OF MEMORY. I wrote to Pruett Publishing, and received the following reply from Jim Pruett: Patrick, Your note was forwarded to me concerning Harry Middleton's signature on RIVERS OF MEMORY. This title was issued in the spring of 1993, on Memorial Day weekend of that year Harry attended the ABA show in Miami with me where we had a signing that announced the book's publication, I have two copies of the signed edition in my own collection of books. Harry died on August 28th of that summer (my wedding anniversary) also see attached obituary. I doubt there are many copies of this book that are signed, but there have to be some in circulation. I hope this answers your question. Jim. Signed by Author(s). Codice libro della libreria 00878
