"Water is best," wrote a Greek poet in the fifth century B.C. Nevertheless, from prehistoric times, people have used plant and animal products for make a huge variety of prepared beverages. These are used not only for refreshment, but also to combat disease, to honor gods or fellow mortals, and to aid relaxation. All of the drinking vessels illustrated here are in the permanent collection of The Corning Museum of Glass. The earliest of them was made by the ancient Romans, and the most recent is the work of the contemporary glass artist Jay Musler. They include Venetian wineglasses, American lemonade glasses, a huge German Humpen for drinking beer, and a glass coffee cup and saucer. The short introduction describes the origin and history of some of our favorite beverages, including coffee, tea, beer, and wine.
