Grade 9-12 These additions to the series deserve praise for their readability. Both open with chapters featuring some high point in the person's life and then backtrack to cover in detail their early years and their rise to leadership. Both include highlights of the world events that helped mold their lives. There are many black-and-white photographs with informative captions. Primarily because of its subject, the Blum biography is the more complicated of the two. Blum was the first socialist and the first Jew to serve as premier of France. Bronner gives a detailed account of this brilliant man's life as literary critic (who was inspired by his school librarian), lawyer, prisoner-of-war, politician, and, mostly, as socialist thinker and leader. Bronner clearly likes his subject but can be critical, as when he questions Blum's lack of leadership among the socialists during World War I. Tito covers the subject's excellent military leadership in World War II and recounts the remarkable tactics he used in leading his 20-odd thousand partisan troops to safety from the pursuing German army. Indeed, Tito's career, from poverty and self-education to leader-for-life of Yugoslavia, has the makings of a novel itself. Pure objectivity when it comes to telling the story of either of these men is obviously impossible, but neither of these authors seems to have an ax to grind. Two successful biographies for high-school students. Robert E. Unsworth, Scarsdale Junior High School, N.Y.
