From the Inside Flap:

Ray Nitschke (1936-1998) was the one player that Chicago Bears middle linebacker Dick Butkus admired above all others, the player that Dallas Cowboys running back Preston Pearson called the hardest-hitting in the NFL. "Number 66" influenced a generation of superstar middle linebackers, including Butkus, Tommy Nobis, Nick Buoniconti, Willie Lanier, and Jack Lambert. On the field, Nitschke covered himself with equal parts mud and glory as he helped transform the Green Bay Packers from a ragtag team of losers into a sports legend.

Based on dozens of interviews, Nitschke covers such milestones as the loss of both his parents by age thirteen and subsequent rearing by a brother only eight years older; his early days as a star Univesrity of Illinios athlete; his MVP award in the 1962 NFL title game against the New York Giants; his performances in the 1964 Pro Bowl and the 1967 "Ice Bowl" (the legendary championship game played in subzero weather); his 1978 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; the renaming of the Packer practice grounds as Nitschke Field in 1997; and his tragic dealth of a heart attack at age sixty-one and the ensuing memorials and tributes. Also included is a detailed year-by-year analysis of his astonishing fifteen-season career as a Packer, a tenure surpassed only by quarterback Bart Star.

Nitschke is the first biography of a player whose very name conjurs up imagess of a magical time in NFL history, a time of championship wars waged in December cold and mud. Award-winning sportswriter Edward Gruver reveals a man and a team that captured the imagination of America's sporting public and remains a symbol of athletic excellence to this day.

Descrizione libro Taylor Trade Publishing, United States, 2002. Hardback. Condizione libro: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. With his no-nonsense, no-frills style of play, Hall of Fame middle linebacker Ray Nitschke personified the Lombardi era of the Green Bay Packers. Called the hardest hitter in NFL history by many football historians and fellow players, #66 instilled fear in opponents with his crushing blows, loudmouth taunting and trademark, toothless sneer. Drafted by Green Bay in the third round in 1958, Nitschke eventually went on to MVP honors in 1962, Pro-Bowl selection in 1964 and All-Pro selections in 1964, 65 and 66 playing in 190 games over his 15-year career, the second most in Green Bay history. Not only does Nitschke describe impressive statistics and football feats; it provides an intimate look into the life of a man who conquered his own emotional demons with alcohol abuse and aggression. Through interviews and first-hand accounts by players, coaches, journalists and friends, we find that Nitschke, the on-field ogre, was a gentleman and dedicated family man. As the product of a struggling blue-collar, Midwestern upbringing, Nitschke made himself available to football lovers and Green Bay fans of all ages, active in the community until his death in 1998.Nitschke accurately paints the picture of an everyman, despite-all-odds football player who rose to inhuman heights in the game and forever changed the course of defensive denomination and player intensity in the NFL.
