'Cushion plants' play an essential part in the well-planned rock garden. While they all form, more or less, a mound of closely packed foliage, they offer also great diversity of size, leaf and flower. Thanks to these differences a quite modest assortment of cushion species can provide flower from January to September and interest all the year round.
Here Duncan Lowe shows how to make the most of cushion plants. For the gardener with limited time or skill, they include trouble-free, near-indestructible types; and at the other extreme there are exquisite rarities to reward determination and expertise.
The book considers why and where these plants have evolved - keeping the more complex sciences at a respectful distance! There follows an explanation of their character and behaviour, species by species, revealing what these hold for the grower. The ways and means of cultivation are explained in great detail. Similar attention is devoted to the things that can go wrong, through pests, diseases and other causes, with advice on ways to recognize and combat them.
