Ritter is a professor emeritus in the Department of History at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, where he taught for more than forty years. He received his doctorate in history from the University of Virginia. He has lectured on Alaska's history aboard the SS Universe during its Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska cruises.
