“The duo [Barbara Nichol and illustrator Anja Reichel] must have had loads of fun producing this work, because the pure joy carries over to the reading.... [D]eliciously satirical.... [T]he book sets up the pooches to teach readers an important lesson about diversity and will delight readers of all ages.”
–Edmonton Journal
“Safe and Sound is witty, imaginative, cleverly rhythmed and rhymed – a delight.”
–The Toronto Star
“Nichol’s story is full of warmth and...humour.... Parents, teachers and other caregivers will find that this fun, relaxing book is a pleasure to read with their children. Reading this book before a family vacation or during a unit on multiculturalism will help young children prepare for an experience of the “otherness” of the rest of society and/or the world.... Reading this little story will make readers feel “safe and sound” in the comfort of their own home. Highly Recommended.”
–CM Magazine
“Nichol’s long rhyming poem is a humorous introduction not only to the challenges of world travel but also to the attitudes that can limit the unprepared tourist’s enjoyment of foreign places.... Anja Reichel’s colourful oil paintings recall and celebrate modernist European art, capturing the liveliness and light of the foreign scenes on the one hand, and the deep anxiety of the dogs on the other.... [T]his book is a clever way to prepare intrepid would-be young tourists for the realities and joys of travel.”
–Quill and Quire
“The witty, rhythmic verse in this humorous long poem begs to be read aloud.”
–Today’s Parent
