Grade 4-6-- After the death of her husband, Rebecca Garner courageously moves her six children from Tennessee to the Texas prairies of 1851 to pursue a better life. The family endures Indian attacks, rough weather, and life-threatening illness, nurtured by Rebecca's strong-willed belief that they will survive. The story is told from the point-of-view of daughter Kitty, 12. She makes two brave journeys, one to acquire the "chill cure" for her malaria-infected brother, and the other to help Big Foot Wallace deliver an important message to the Indians from Sam Houston. This adventure, as indicated in the appended historical notes and ancestry chart, is based on the author's great-great aunt, the real Kitty. Each chapter includes suspense and excitement, and while some scenes come across as old-fashioned and a bit soppy, Kitty emerges as a brave, resourceful girl, mature for her age and experience. With black-and-white drawings that highlight the main event of each chapter, this book lacks the charm of Carol R. Brink's Caddie Woodlawn (Macmillan 1973) or Laura Ingalls's "Little House" books (HarperCollins), but is a realistic story of a struggling pioneer family and the events that influenced their lives. --Rita Soltan, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI
